MediaCom I. Am. Coming.

After a delicious coffee from the mall near the hotel at an adorable little café/bakery, we set out on the 9 am departure from the hotel. This had me in good spirits as we headed to our first real destination of the trip. Taking the already familiar route we headed to the underground on our way to MEDIACOM!

This place has excited me from the first time it was mentioned back in Canada. At MediaCom, they are an organization dedicated to specific companies to make better connections between people and brands. They started out buying and selling ad space for clients such as Coca-Cola, Shell, and, Volts Wagon. Recently they broadened their company in order to stay a competing threat in the media industry. The company now has many clients that who rely on them for the best information and guiding when it comes to promoting their business/commodity.

After having four lectures yesterday we got an extremely good insight on what the company does and how they are taking on the future of media; what they think the future holds and how to progress with it. After getting a brief overview of the history of the company we were introduced to three parts of the company, one about broadcasting, and how the ads work with television and cinema. Another about SKY television, and then lastly about the future technology that MediaCom will have to adapt with.

When we talked about broadcasting with respect to advertising we touched on the advertising mostly. Because this gives companies a direct audience it is a valuable place to buy advertising space. Furthermore, because the movies being played have ratings on them it is easier to reach a target audience.

An employee who works directly for SKY came in to discuss, what we all thoguht, was SKY Vodka...this was not the case. In the UK SKY is a television station that is paid for on top of regular cable channels offeringsubscribers many more options and viewing times. SKY is currently in a battle with channel 4, because SKY used to air the football games (that bring in the highest audience annually) and channel 4 recently bought the rights to air many of these games (for free). It is tough to say what may happen to SKY...

The last speaker was talking to us about technology, and how advertising must adapt with technology. He showed us a video about glasses that were basically a computer/cellphone in front of your face and voice activated. You can call, text, take pictures, find directions, weather, and more. It seemed unrealistic that people would actually want these things but the point being made was that we have this technology, it's just not a commodity yet. Staying up to speed with the future is important when working in the media business.

The MediaCom building was fantastic and opened my mind to the further possibilities of what I can do with this degree/diploma. I am not sure that I don’t want to pursue strictly PR anymore, since we are offered four amazing media courses at GH I don't want to limit myself and MediaCom also mentioned who important it is to be versatile and know a bit of everything.

The gang out front of MediaCom

When we left MediaCom we all split up as a group and Stephanie and I found our own way to the Notional Art Gallery (her idea, she wanted to see a da Vinci painting). I was personally uncomfortable due to the fact that I am not religious whatsoever, and I found it a tad awkward. So much that I left her in the building and made use of personal time to snap some cool shots out front of the gallery. Great statues, different lamp posts, water fountains, and the Canadian embassy made the trip worthwhile for me.

Pretty cool lamp post against the rumbling sky

When Steph was done we went back to the hotel, got jazzed up in heels and decided to rock out in London at a night club. Being approached by a promoter as we exited the underground he offered us a free ticket stub for a drink at his club. We accepted and walked into a cool London club with booths, bars, a DJ, and dance floor. We made new friends and had a blast not wanting to leave, but finally heading to the hotel at about 2 am we took a taxi and arrived safe but exhausted not looking forward to the 7 am wake up the next day…
